My guess is that is the rats. Light might ward them off. Fire will help for certain.

Very easy. The problem lies in their overwhelming numbers.

They pour forth as if they were the waters in Noah's flood. Some are, as many things here are, larger than their ordinary counterparts, but the real danger is in the disease and filth that hangs about them and that quickly passes into the blood, rendering even the strongest incapacitated.
