I've heard it a number of times, and yet it has never been explained in full. It always comes as though it's what one should say, instead of what one believes.
I agree that it is not a common belief. It is also not always feasible to truly experience and understand their lives on more than an intellectual level. However, I think that we should strive for such comprehension and empathy whenever possible, in addition to listening to their words with an open mind. I do not believe that we can, in good faith, make decisions about a situation without at least doing that much.
...but I also know that many of my relatives consider me to be idealistic and sheltered, and that the latter is undoubtedly true. That is why I wish to learn all that I can while I am here.
There are those I know who would make the same claim, and yet I can not put my faith in it. When the mob is given power they would tear our kind from our homes and have us murdered in the streets. I've seen them call for the blood of my family, only for the mistaken belief that we are outsiders. They do not respect our rule until order is put upon them, and entertainment is given to them. Why then should we empathize with them?
Because they are human as well. Prejudices born of fear and ignorance are difficult to overcome but it is my belief that although progress may be slow, it is possible. Do you know if there are other reasons for the people to feel so strongly against you?
